The Menu Dissolve Effect
Windows 10 includes a subtle visual flourish designed to make the operating system feel smoother and more elegant. When you right-click on your desktop, inside a folder, or on an application to bring up a context menu, and then click an option, the menu doesn’t just instantly vanish. Instead, the “Fade out menu items after clicking” setting causes the menu to gently dissolve into transparency over a fraction of a second.
While this looks nice on a high-end desktop, it actually introduces a tiny, artificial delay into your workflow. If you are a power user who navigates menus very quickly, waiting for the fade animation to complete before the system feels ready for the next input can be subtly annoying. Furthermore, on low-end hardware, virtual machines, or slow Remote Desktop connections, this fade effect can stutter or tear, making the system feel sluggish rather than smooth. If you prefer your menus to disappear instantly the moment you click a selection, you should disable this fade animation.
How to Turn Off Menu Fading
You can force menus to close instantly via the advanced system performance settings.
- Click the Start button and type Advanced system settings.
- Select View advanced system settings from the search results. This directly opens the System Properties window to the Advanced tab.
- Under the Performance section near the top, click the Settings… button.
- A new “Performance Options” window will appear. Ensure you are on the Visual Effects tab.
- Scroll through the list of effects and locate the checkbox labelled Fade out menu items after clicking.
- Click the checkbox to remove the checkmark.
- Click Apply, and then click OK.
From now on, whenever you make a selection from a right-click context menu or a standard application drop-down menu, the menu box will vanish immediately with zero graphical delay.
