The Full Screen Distraction
By default, when you put an application into Full Screen mode on macOS (by clicking the green dot in the top left corner of a window), Apple attempts to provide a completely immersive experience by hiding both the Dock and the Menu Bar. While the Dock stays hidden until you move your mouse to the bottom edge, the Menu Bar is designed to slide down from the top edge whenever your cursor approaches the top of the screen.
However, this “auto-hide and show” behavior can be incredibly annoying. If you are using a web browser in full screen and try to click a tab near the top, or if you are using a creative application with tools located at the top edge, accidentally triggering the Menu Bar causes it to slide down and cover the exact thing you were trying to click. This results in misclicks and broken concentration. If you frequently use full-screen apps and need reliable access to the top edge of your application window without the Menu Bar interfering, you must disable this sliding animation.
How to Keep the Menu Bar Visible in Full Screen
You can force the Menu Bar to remain permanently visible, even in full-screen mode, via your System Settings.
- Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of your screen and select System Settings… (or System Preferences).
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Control Center (in older macOS versions, look for “Dock & Menu Bar”).
- In the right-hand pane, look for the section labelled Menu Bar Only or scroll down to the specific Menu Bar behavior settings.
- Locate the dropdown menu labelled Automatically hide and show the menu bar.
- Click the dropdown menu and change the setting from “In Full Screen Only” (or “Always”) to Never.
From now on, when you maximize an application into full-screen mode, the Menu Bar will remain permanently pinned to the top of the screen. It will no longer slide down and cover your application tabs, providing a much more predictable clicking experience at the top edge of your display.
