How to Stop Google Docs from Automatically Updating the Table of Contents

The Shifting Page Numbers

If you are writing a long report or a book in Google Docs, you will likely insert a Table of Contents (ToC) at the beginning. By default, Docs generates this table automatically by scanning your document for headings (Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.) and matching them with their corresponding page numbers. As you continue to write, adding paragraphs and inserting images, the text naturally flows downward, changing the page numbers of all subsequent headings.

Google Docs provides a “Refresh” button on the Table of Contents, allowing you to update it with a single click. However, if you are finalizing a document for printing and you want absolute, manual control over the ToC layout (perhaps you want to manually group certain sections or use custom page numbering that doesn’t match the automatic system), an accidental click of the refresh button will instantly overwrite all your hard work, reverting it to the default algorithmic layout.

How to “Flatten” the Table of Contents

Google Docs does not have a “lock” button for the ToC. To prevent it from ever updating again, you must sever its connection to the automated heading system.

  1. Open your document in Google Docs.
  2. Ensure your Table of Contents currently looks exactly how you want it.
  3. Click and drag your mouse to highlight the entire Table of Contents.
  4. Press Ctrl + C (or Cmd + C on Mac) to copy it to your clipboard.
  5. Immediately press the Delete key (or Backspace) to completely delete the automated Table of Contents box.
  6. Press Ctrl + Shift + V (or Cmd + Shift + V on Mac) to Paste without formatting.

Your Table of Contents will be pasted back into the document as standard, plain text. The refresh icon will be gone, and it will no longer be linked to the document’s headings. It is now a static list that you can manually edit, and it will never automatically update or overwrite your changes again.
