How to Disable the Google Docs ‘Show breaks’ Option (Page Breaks)

The Visual Interruption of Pages

By default, Google Docs is designed to simulate a physical piece of paper. It operates in “Print Layout” mode, meaning that as you type, the document is broken up into individual 8.5×11 inch pages. Between each page, there is a distinct visual break: a grey gap, a shadow effect, and a physical margin indicating where the printer will cut the paper.

However, the vast majority of documents created today will never be printed. They will be read entirely on screens, on phones, or converted into web pages. If you are writing a blog post, a coding script, or a continuous digital report, those visual page breaks are incredibly disruptive. They chop your paragraphs in half and force you to scroll past empty white space. If you want a seamless, continuous writing canvas, you must remove the page breaks.

How to Hide Page Breaks

You can remove the visual gaps by switching away from the standard Print Layout.

  1. Open a document in Google Docs.
  2. Click on the View tab in the top menu bar.
  3. Look for the option near the top of the dropdown list labelled Show print layout.
  4. If there is a checkmark next to it, the page breaks are currently visible. Click on “Show print layout” to uncheck it.

Note: Google Docs recently introduced a more modern way to handle this called “Pageless” mode. To enable it:

  1. Click on File in the top menu bar.
  2. Select Page setup.
  3. At the top of the Page Setup window, click the Pageless tab.
  4. Click OK.

Your document will immediately transform into one continuous, uninterrupted stream of text. The margins will expand to fit your screen, and the distracting grey gaps between pages will be completely eliminated.
