How to Disable the macOS ‘Show Tab Bar’ Option in Finder

The Persistent Tab Bar

Modern versions of macOS brought browser-style tabs to the Finder, allowing you to open multiple folders within a single window. If you press Command + T, a new tab opens, and a horizontal “Tab Bar” appears just beneath the window’s toolbar to help you navigate between them.

By default, when you close all tabs except one, the Tab Bar automatically disappears to save space. However, if the “Show Tab Bar” option has been permanently enabled in the View menu, that empty, grey horizontal strip will remain glued to the top of every Finder window you open, even if you are only looking at a single folder. If you rarely use Finder tabs and want to reclaim that vertical screen real estate, you should ensure the Tab Bar is hidden when not actively in use.

How to Hide the Finder Tab Bar

You can toggle the Tab Bar’s permanent visibility directly from the menu bar.

  1. Open a single, new Finder window (click the smiling Mac icon in your Dock).
  2. Make sure you do not have multiple tabs open in this window.
  3. Look at the very top of your screen to the macOS menu bar.
  4. Click on the View menu.
  5. Look down the dropdown list for the option labelled Hide Tab Bar. (If it says “Show Tab Bar,” the permanent bar is already disabled, and it will only appear when you actively open a second tab).
  6. Click on “Hide Tab Bar”.
  7. Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut: Shift + Command + T.

The empty horizontal strip will instantly vanish from your active Finder window, creating a tighter, more streamlined interface. The Tab Bar will now only appear when it is actually needed (when you press Command + T).
