How to Stop Google Docs from Automatically Inserting Page Breaks

The Printing Relic

Because Google Docs was originally built as a direct competitor to Microsoft Word, its default view is heavily focused on physical paper. As you type a long document, Google Docs will automatically insert a prominent, visual “Page Break”—a thick grey gap separating your text—whenever you reach the bottom of an imaginary 8.5×11 inch sheet of paper.

If you are drafting a blog post, taking infinite scrolling meeting notes, or writing code documentation that will only ever be read on a computer screen, these forced page breaks disrupt the flow of your reading and unnecessarily chop up large tables or images. You can switch Google Docs into a modern, continuous format that completely ignores physical paper constraints.

How to Stop Automatic Page Breaks (Pageless Mode)

You can remove all page breaks by switching your document to the Pageless format.

  1. Open your web browser and navigate to any open document in Google Docs.
  2. At the top of the screen, click on the File menu.
  3. Scroll down near the bottom of the list and click on Page setup.
  4. A popup window will appear with two tabs at the top: Pages and Pageless.
  5. Click on the Pageless tab.
  6. (Optional) You can choose a background color for your infinite canvas here, though white is the default.
  7. Click the blue OK button.

Your document will instantly transform. All the grey gaps between pages will vanish, leaving you with one continuous, infinite scrolling canvas. Tables will stretch to fit your screen, and large images will no longer be awkwardly cut in half by imaginary paper margins.
