How to Stop Windows 10 from Automatically Adjusting Screen Brightness

The Flickering Display

Modern Windows 10 laptops and some high-end desktop monitors come equipped with ambient light sensors. Windows uses these sensors to power a feature called “adaptive brightness.” When you move from a dark room to a bright outdoor area, the screen automatically becomes brighter. When you move back indoors, it dims.

While this is intended to save battery life and reduce eye strain, the sensors are often overly sensitive. If you shift your position, or if a cloud passes over the sun outside your window, the screen will constantly flicker up and down in brightness. This is incredibly distracting if you are trying to edit photos, watch a movie, or focus on a long document. You can disable the sensor and lock your brightness to a single, consistent level.

How to Turn Off Adaptive Brightness

You can stop Windows from automatically changing your screen brightness in the Display settings.

  1. Click the Start button and select the gear icon to open Settings (or press Windows Key + i).
  2. Click on the System category.
  3. In the left-hand sidebar, ensure you are on the Display tab.
  4. Look under the “Brightness and color” heading at the top.
  5. You will see a slider to adjust the brightness manually. Right beneath that slider, look for a checkbox labelled “Change brightness automatically when lighting changes”.
  6. Uncheck this box.

Once unchecked, your screen brightness will remain exactly where you set it on the slider. It will never automatically dim or brighten again unless you manually press the brightness keys on your laptop keyboard or adjust the slider yourself.
