The Silent Inbox Monitor
Many Mac users who rely on the built-in Apple Mail application notice a strange behavior: even if they explicitly close the Mail window or completely quit the application, it sometimes silently launches itself in the background shortly after turning on or waking up the computer. This happens because the Mail app is aggressively trying to sync your inboxes to ensure notifications are ready.
If you prefer to check your email manually at specific times of the day to maintain focus, or if you use a web browser for your email and only keep the Mail app configured as a backup, this automatic background launching is incredibly annoying and drains battery power on MacBooks. You can stop Apple Mail from forcing itself open.
How to Stop Apple Mail from Launching Automatically
You must remove the Mail app from your user account’s automated login items list.
- Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of your screen and select System Settings… (or System Preferences on older macOS versions).
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on General.
- On the right side, click on Login Items.
- Look under the section titled “Open at Login.” This is a list of all applications that have permission to start automatically when you turn on your Mac.
- Find Mail in the list and click on it once to highlight it.
- Click the small Minus (-) button at the bottom of the list to remove it.
- Next, open the Apple Mail application itself.
- Click Mail in the top menu bar and select Settings…
- Go to the General tab.
- Ensure that the “Check for new messages” dropdown is set to Manually rather than Automatically or Every minute.
By removing it from your Login Items and turning off automatic fetching, the Mail app will stay completely dormant until you intentionally click its icon in the Dock to open it.
