The Privacy Protection Measure
When you visit a website that wants to use your webcam or microphone (such as Google Meet, Zoom web, or a web-based audio recorder), Google Chrome will display a small prompt near the address bar asking for your permission to allow access. This is the default, secure behavior.
However, if you are setting up a shared computer in a public space (like a library or a classroom), or if your computer does not even have a webcam or microphone attached to it, you may want to completely lock down these hardware permissions. Instead of being prompted on every site, you can configure Chrome to outright reject all camera and microphone requests instantly, providing a strict layer of privacy and preventing users from accidentally broadcasting themselves.
How to Block All Camera and Microphone Access
You can globally deny hardware access in Chrome’s Site Settings.
- Open Google Chrome.
- Click the Three Vertical Dots (Menu) in the top right corner and select Settings.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy and security.
- In the main window, click on Site settings.
- Scroll down to the “Permissions” section and click on Camera.
- Under the “Default behavior” heading, select the radio button for “Don’t allow sites to use your camera.”
- Click the back arrow at the top left to return to the previous screen.
- Now click on Microphone.
- Similarly, select the radio button for “Don’t allow sites to use your microphone.”
Google Chrome is now strictly locked down. If a website attempts to access your webcam or microphone, Chrome will automatically block the request without ever bothering to show you a prompt, ensuring complete privacy.
