How to Disable the Windows 10 ‘Game Bar’ and DVR Prompts

The Gaming Interruption

Windows 10 includes a built-in feature called the Xbox Game Bar, which is designed to help gamers record their screen, take screenshots, and chat with friends on the Xbox network. To make sure you know it exists, Windows often displays a popup prompt saying “Press Win + G to open Game Bar” whenever you launch a full-screen application or a game.

If you are not a PC gamer, or if you simply use professional recording software like OBS Studio instead of the built-in Windows tools, this popup is an unnecessary annoyance. Furthermore, the background “Game DVR” process that powers this feature can consume system resources and cause stuttering or frame drops in graphics-intensive applications. You can completely disable the Game Bar and stop the prompts.

How to Disable the Xbox Game Bar

You can turn off this gaming overlay directly in the Windows Settings app.

  1. Click the Start button and select the gear icon to open Settings (or press Windows Key + i).
  2. Click on the Gaming category.
  3. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Xbox Game Bar (or just “Game bar” in older versions).
  4. At the top of the main page, look for the toggle switch labelled “Enable Xbox Game Bar for things like recording game clips, chatting with friends, and receiving game invites.”
  5. Toggle the switch to the Off position.
  6. Next, click on Captures in the left-hand sidebar.
  7. Under the “Background recording” heading, ensure the switch for “Record in the background while I’m playing a game” is also turned Off.

Windows will no longer run the Game DVR in the background, and you will never see the “Press Win + G” prompt again when launching full-screen applications.
