The Handoff Interruption
Apple’s “Handoff” is a feature within the broader Continuity ecosystem that allows your devices to talk to each other. If you start writing an email in the Mail app on your iPhone, a small icon will immediately pop up on the left side of your Mac’s Dock. Clicking that icon will open the exact same draft on your Mac so you can finish typing it there.
While this sounds magical, it can be highly distracting. If you live in a multi-device household or simply use your phone and Mac for entirely different tasks, having your Mac constantly suggest that you open the Safari webpage you are currently reading on your iPad is annoying. It clutters the Dock and breaks your focus. You can disable this cross-device communication completely.
How to Disable the Handoff Feature
You can turn off Handoff within the General system settings.
- Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of your Mac’s screen.
- Select System Settings… (or System Preferences on older macOS versions).
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on General.
- In the main window, click on AirDrop & Handoff.
- Look for the toggle switch labelled Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices.
- Toggle the switch to the Off position.
As soon as you disable this setting, your Mac will stop listening for activity on your iPhone and iPad. The extra icons will never appear in your Dock again, ensuring your desktop workflow remains completely isolated from your mobile devices.
