The Full Screen Menu Bar Problem
When you click the green maximize button in the top-left corner of a Mac app (like Safari or Pages), the application enters true Full Screen mode. To completely eliminate distractions, macOS automatically slides the top menu bar (containing your clock, Wi-Fi status, and the Apple logo) off the top of the screen. To access it, you must push your mouse cursor all the way to the top edge and wait for it to slide back down.
While this is great for watching movies, it is very annoying for productivity. If you frequently need to check the time, monitor your battery percentage, or access application-specific menus (like File > Export), the constant sliding animation slows you down. You can configure macOS to keep the menu bar permanently visible, even when an application is in Full Screen mode.
How to Keep the Menu Bar Visible in Full Screen
You can adjust the auto-hide behavior in the Desktop & Dock settings.
- Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of your Mac’s screen.
- Select System Settings… (or System Preferences on older versions of macOS).
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Desktop & Dock.
- Scroll down to the Menu Bar section.
- Look for the dropdown menu labelled Automatically hide and show the menu bar.
- Click the dropdown menu and change the selection from “In Full Screen Only” (or “Always”) to Never.
Once you set this to “Never,” you can maximize any application on your Mac. The app will expand to fill the entire screen, but it will stop just short of the top edge, leaving your menu bar firmly locked in place so you can always see your clock and status icons at a glance.
