How to Disable the ‘Pageless’ Format and Restore Standard Pages in Google Docs

What is the Pageless Format?

Google Docs recently introduced a “Pageless” view. Instead of mimicking an 8.5 x 11 piece of paper with strict top and bottom margins, the Pageless format turns your document into an infinite, continuously scrolling canvas. Images automatically resize to fit your screen, and wide data tables don’t get cut off by artificial page borders.

While this is excellent for drafting purely digital content, it is a nightmare if you actually intend to print the document or export it as a strictly formatted PDF (like a resume or a legal contract). If your document has suddenly lost its page breaks, you need to restore the standard format.

How to Restore Standard Pages in Google Docs

You can toggle between Pageless and Pages within the Page Setup menu.

1. Open your document in Google Docs.
2. In the top menu bar, click on File.
3. Scroll down to the bottom of the dropdown menu and select Page setup.
4. A pop-up window will appear with two tabs at the top: “Pages” and “Pageless”.
5. Click on the Pages tab.
6. Adjust your margins, orientation, and paper size if necessary.
7. Click the blue OK button at the bottom of the window.

Set Pages as Your Default

If you never want to use the Pageless format again, you can set the standard layout as your permanent default for all future documents.

1. Return to File > Page setup.
2. Ensure you are on the Pages tab.
3. Before clicking OK, look in the bottom-left corner of the window and click the Set as default button.
4. Then click OK.

Your document will immediately return to a traditional view with distinct page breaks, headers, and footers.
