How to Stop Windows 11 from Automatically Backing Up Folders to OneDrive

When you set up Windows 11 with a Microsoft Account, the operating system aggressively pushes you to use OneDrive, its cloud storage service. By default, Windows will automatically attempt to back up your entire Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders to the cloud. While this is great for data redundancy, OneDrive only provides 5GB of free storage. If you have large video files on your Desktop, you will quickly hit this limit, resulting in constant, annoying “OneDrive is full” notifications. Furthermore, it changes the physical file paths of your local documents. If you prefer to keep your files strictly on your local hard drive, you can stop this automatic sync.

How to Stop Automatic Folder Backup

You can turn off folder syncing directly through the OneDrive application settings.

  1. Look at your Windows 11 system tray (the bottom-right corner of your taskbar, near the clock).
  2. Click the blue or white cloud icon to open OneDrive. (If you don’t see it, click the small up-arrow to show hidden icons).
  3. In the OneDrive pop-up, click the gear icon (Help & Settings) in the top-right corner.
  4. Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
  5. A new window will open. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Sync and back up.
  6. At the top of the main pane, click the Manage back up button.
  7. A window displaying your Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders will appear.
  8. Toggle the switches next to each folder to the Off position.
  9. Click Save changes.

OneDrive will immediately stop uploading new files from these locations to the cloud. Please note that files already uploaded will remain in your OneDrive folder; you will need to manually drag them back to your local C: drive if you want to remove them from the cloud completely.
