For many Mac users, plugging in a pair of wired headphones (or connecting a Bluetooth headset) triggers an incredibly frustrating automation: the Apple Music app instantly launches in the background and sometimes immediately begins blasting the first song in your library alphabetically. This legacy behaviour was originally designed to create a seamless “plug and play” iPod experience, but today, it mostly just interrupts people trying to join a Zoom call or watch a YouTube video. Unfortunately, Apple has not provided a simple “off” switch for this behaviour, but there is a reliable workaround.
Why Does This Happen?
Your Mac is listening for a specific “play/pause” hardware command that most modern headphones send the moment they connect. macOS interprets this signal as a command to launch the default media player (Apple Music).
How to Stop the Auto-Launch
Because there is no official toggle switch, the most effective way to stop this behaviour without downloading third-party script blockers is to revoke the Music app’s background permissions.
- Click the Apple Logo () in the top-left corner of your Mac’s menu bar.
- Select System Settings… (or System Preferences on older versions).
- Scroll down the left-hand sidebar and click on Login Items (usually located under the “General” tab).
- Look at the section titled Allow in the Background. This list shows apps allowed to run unseen tasks.
- Scroll through the list and find Apple Music (or sometimes simply listed as “Apple”).
- Toggle the switch next to it to the Off position.
An Alternative Nuclear Option
If changing the background permissions does not solve the issue for your specific brand of headphones, and you do not actually use the Apple Music streaming service, the only guaranteed way to stop the pop-up is to completely remove the app’s ability to open. You can do this by dragging the Apple Music app from your Applications folder directly into the Trash. (Note: You can easily redownload it from the Mac App Store later if you change your mind).
