Google recently updated the web interface for Google Drive, introducing a new default landing page called “Home.” This view uses a machine-learning algorithm to analyze your activity and present a curated list of files and folders it assumes you need right now. While some users appreciate this predictive AI approach, many professionals prefer the traditional, hierarchical folder structure of the classic “My Drive” view. If you find the Home tab cluttered and unpredictable, you can force Google Drive to always open directly to your organized My Drive folders instead.
How to Change the Default Start Page
This preference is tied to your specific Google Account settings within the web browser. Changing it on your desktop will not affect the layout of the mobile app.
- Open your web browser and navigate to drive.google.com. Log in to your Google Account if prompted.
- In the top-right corner of the interface (near your profile picture), click on the Gear icon.
- Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
- A settings panel will overlay your screen. Ensure you are on the General tab on the left-hand side.
- Scroll down through the main pane until you locate the section titled Start page.
- You will see two radio button options: Home and My Drive.
- Click the radio button next to My Drive to select it.
- You will see a small, temporary pop-up notification at the bottom of the screen stating “Settings updated.” There is no save button to click.
- Click the Back arrow or the X in the top-left corner of the Settings panel to close it.
The change is instantaneous. The next time you open a new tab and navigate to Google Drive, it will bypass the algorithmic “Home” screen entirely and land you squarely in the familiar, organized root directory of your “My Drive.”
