How to Turn Off Keyboard Clicks on an iPhone

By default, every time you tap a letter on the iPhone’s virtual keyboard, it emits a distinct, synthetic “click” sound. Apple designed this auditory feedback to mimic the tactile sensation of a physical typewriter, helping users confirm they have successfully struck a key. However, if you are texting in a quiet environment, during a meeting, or late at night while someone else is sleeping, this constant clicking can be incredibly disruptive. While you can silence it temporarily using the physical mute switch on the side of your phone, you can also permanently disable keyboard sounds within the settings.

How to Permanently Disable Keyboard Clicks

Turning off the keyboard click sound is a system-wide setting. Once disabled, the keyboard will remain silent across all applications, including Messages, WhatsApp, and Safari.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down the main menu and tap on Sounds & Haptics (or simply Sounds on older iOS versions).
  3. Scroll down towards the bottom of this menu until you find the “System Haptics & Sounds” section.
  4. Locate the option labelled Keyboard Feedback and tap it.
  5. On the next screen, you will see two toggles: Sound and Haptic.
  6. Tap the toggle switch next to Sound to turn it off (the switch will turn from green to grey).

A Note on Haptic Feedback

On modern iPhones (iPhone 8 and newer), Apple introduced “Haptic” feedback for the keyboard. When enabled, this feature provides a subtle, physical vibration underneath your fingertips every time you strike a key.

Many users find that haptic feedback provides the physical confirmation they need without the annoying auditory clicking. In step 5 above, try leaving Haptic turned on while keeping Sound turned off. This provides the best of both worlds: tactile responsiveness in total silence.
