By design, Apple MacBooks are programmed to enter sleep mode immediately when the lid is closed. This conserves battery and secures the machine. However, many users prefer to use their MacBook in “clamshell mode”—connected to an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse while the laptop itself remains closed and tucked away. Achieving this requires specific hardware connections, or the use of third-party software if you do not have an external monitor.
Method 1: Native “Clamshell Mode” (Requires External Display)
macOS natively supports running with the lid closed, but only if the operating system detects that you have a complete external workstation setup connected. This prevents the Mac from accidentally staying awake inside a backpack and overheating.
To use native clamshell mode, you must meet three strict requirements:
- Power: Your MacBook must be connected to a power adapter (wall charger). It will not operate in clamshell mode on battery power alone.
- Display: An external monitor must be connected and actively displaying your desktop.
- Peripherals: An external keyboard and mouse (or trackpad) must be paired via Bluetooth or connected via USB.
Once all three conditions are met, simply close the lid of your MacBook. The external monitor will flash black for a moment as the system reconfigures the display routing, and then your desktop will reappear on the external screen. The MacBook is now running fully awake with the lid closed.
Method 2: Using Amphetamine (No External Display Required)
If you want to keep your MacBook awake with the lid closed without connecting it to an external monitor—for example, if you are downloading a massive file overnight, rendering a video, or running the Mac as a headless home server—you cannot use native macOS settings. You must bypass the system using a utility app.
Amphetamine is the industry standard for this task. It is a highly respected, free application available directly on the Mac App Store.
- Download and install Amphetamine from the Mac App Store.
- Launch the app. It will place a small pill-shaped icon in your top menu bar.
- Click the Amphetamine icon and select Quick Preferences.
- Uncheck the box that says “Allow system sleep when display is closed”. (Note: You may be prompted to install a secondary helper script called ‘Amphetamine Enhancer’ to enable this specific feature on modern macOS versions due to Apple’s security sandboxing. Follow the developer’s instructions).
- Once configured, click the Amphetamine icon in the menu bar and start a session (e.g., click Indefinitely).
While the Amphetamine session is active, you can close the lid of your MacBook and the machine will continue running at full power.
Important Warning: Running a MacBook at high computational loads (like video rendering) with the lid closed can cause the machine to run significantly hotter, as heat normally dissipates through the keyboard deck. Ensure the laptop is on a hard, flat surface with adequate ventilation.
