If you find yourself constantly squinting at the screen while reading emails, or repeatedly using the ‘zoom in’ keyboard shortcut for every new message you receive, the default font settings in Apple Mail are likely too small for your display resolution. Fortunately, macOS allows you to permanently change the default font face and size for both incoming messages and the emails you compose, ensuring a comfortable reading experience without needing manual adjustments.
Changing the Font Size for Reading and Writing
Apple Mail separates its font settings into two primary categories: the font used for displaying plain text messages (and messages where the sender did not specify a font) and the font used when you write a new email.
- Open the Mail application on your Mac.
- In the top-left corner of the macOS menu bar, click on Mail.
- Select Settings… (or Preferences… on older versions of macOS) from the drop-down menu.
- In the settings window, click on the Fonts & Colours tab at the top.
You will see three distinct options to configure:
1. Message list font
This setting controls the size of the text in the preview pane (the middle column showing the sender’s name, subject line, and a brief snippet of the email). Click the Select… button next to “Message list font” to open the standard macOS Font panel. Here, you can increase the Size slider on the right-hand side. The changes will immediately reflect in your Mail inbox.
2. Message font
This is the most crucial setting. It dictates the default font size used for the actual body content of the emails you read. Click the Select… button next to “Message font” and increase the size (e.g., from 12pt to 14pt or 16pt). This will make all plain text emails significantly easier to read.
3. Fixed-width font
This setting is primarily used for displaying raw code snippets or highly technical emails that require exact character alignment. You can generally leave this setting alone unless you specifically subscribe to developer mailing lists.
Understanding the Limitations with HTML Emails
While changing the “Message font” is highly effective for plain text communication, it is important to understand its limitations. Many modern emails (like newsletters, marketing materials, and corporate memos) are formatted using HTML. If the sender explicitly hard-coded a specific font size (e.g., “Arial 10pt”) into the HTML structure of their email, Apple Mail will respect the sender’s design and override your personal font settings.
If you frequently receive heavily formatted HTML emails with microscopic text, changing the default font size in settings will not fix them. In those specific cases, you must rely on the manual zoom function: press Command + Plus (+) on your keyboard to temporarily enlarge the text of the currently open message.
