How to Quickly Switch Between Open Apps on an iPad Using Keyboard Shortcuts

While the iPad relies heavily on touch gestures for navigation, pairing it with a physical keyboard (like the Apple Magic Keyboard or a third-party Bluetooth alternative) transforms it into a highly efficient productivity machine. One of the greatest benefits of using a physical keyboard with iPadOS is the ability to bypass touch-based multitasking menus and switch between active applications instantly using keyboard shortcuts, mirroring the experience of a traditional desktop computer.

The App Switcher Shortcut (Command + Tab)

If you have ever used a Mac, the primary app-switching shortcut on the iPad will be immediately familiar. iPadOS utilizes the exact same key combination to cycle through your recently used applications.

  1. Ensure your physical keyboard is connected and active.
  2. Press and hold the Command (⌘) key on your keyboard.
  3. While holding Command, press the Tab key once. Do not release the Command key.
  4. An application overlay will appear in the centre of your screen, displaying a row of icons representing your open apps, arranged from most recently used (on the left) to least recently used (on the right).
  5. To cycle through the list, keep holding the Command key and tap Tab repeatedly to move one app to the right.
  6. If you overshoot your target app, you can hold Command + Shift and tap Tab to move backwards to the left.
  7. When the app you want to switch to is highlighted, release all keys. The iPad will instantly bring that application to the foreground.

Using the Spotlight Search Shortcut

While Command + Tab is perfect for switching between the three or four apps you are actively using, it becomes inefficient if you need to open an app you haven’t touched in hours. For opening inactive apps quickly, the Spotlight Search shortcut is superior.

  1. Press Command (⌘) + Spacebar simultaneously.
  2. The Spotlight Search bar will instantly drop down from the top of the screen, regardless of what app you are currently in.
  3. Begin typing the name of the application you want to open (e.g., “Notes” or “Safari”).
  4. As soon as the app appears as the top search result, press Enter.

This method allows you to launch or switch to any application installed on your iPad in less than a second, entirely without lifting your hands from the keyboard to touch the screen.

Accessing the Globe Key Shortcuts

If you are using a newer Apple keyboard equipped with a dedicated Globe key (the key featuring a globe icon, usually located in the bottom-left corner), you have access to additional multitasking shortcuts designed specifically for iPadOS window management.

For example, pressing Globe + Up Arrow instantly opens the native iPad App Switcher screen (the same view you get by swiping up from the bottom edge of the screen). While not as fast as Command+Tab for jumping directly to the last-used app, it provides a full-screen overview of your workspaces, including Split View and Slide Over combinations, which you can then navigate using the arrow keys and select with Enter.
