Google Drive is an excellent cloud storage solution for archiving files of all formats. However, many users experience a frustrating issue where perfectly formatted PDF documents uploaded to Drive are automatically converted into Google Docs format. This conversion often ruins the original layout, breaks formatting, and alters the document’s intended presentation. If you want your PDFs to remain strictly as PDFs in the cloud, you need to adjust a specific Google Drive setting.
Why Google Drive Converts PDFs
Google Drive includes an optional setting designed to automatically convert uploaded files into their corresponding Google Workspace editor formats (Docs, Sheets, or Slides). This feature is incredibly useful if you primarily upload Microsoft Office files that you intend to edit online. However, because Google Docs attempts to apply Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and layout translation to PDFs, the automatic conversion process frequently results in garbled text and broken images when applied to complex PDF layouts.
How to Disable Automatic Document Conversion
The conversion setting is tied to your Google account preferences on the web, not the specific file itself. Disabling it ensures all future uploads maintain their original file extensions.
- Open your web browser and navigate to drive.google.com. Log in to your Google account if prompted.
- In the top right corner of the Google Drive interface, click the gear icon (Settings).
- Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
- In the settings overlay window, ensure the General tab is selected on the left sidebar.
- Look for the section labelled Convert uploads.
- Uncheck the box next to Convert uploaded files to Google Docs editor format.
- Click the Done button (or simply close the settings window, depending on the interface version) to save your changes.
Handling Existing Uploads
Disabling the “Convert uploads” setting only applies to files you upload after making the change. It will not retroactively convert Google Docs back into PDFs.
If you have a file that was previously converted and you need the PDF version, you have two options. You can either delete the converted Google Doc and re-upload the original PDF from your local hard drive (now that the setting is disabled), or you can open the converted Google Doc, click File > Download, and select PDF Document (.pdf). However, be aware that downloading a previously mangled document will export it with the broken formatting intact; re-uploading the original file is always the superior solution.
