How to Password Protect a PDF File Using Mac Preview

If you have sensitive PDF documents like tax returns or bank statements on your Mac, you should password protect them. The built-in Preview app makes this incredibly easy without needing third-party software.

How to Password Protect a PDF

  1. Open your PDF file using the Preview app.
  2. Click on File in the top menu bar.
  3. Select Export (do not choose “Export as PDF”).
  4. In the save dialog, check the box next to Encrypt.
  5. Type and verify your password, then click Save.
