When you open a folder full of photos in Windows 11, you see small preview images instead of generic icons. To make these folders load instantly, Windows secretly generates and saves a tiny copy of every single image you view in a hidden system database called the Thumbnail Cache.
Over time, this database can become severely corrupted. You might start seeing the wrong preview image for a file, or the thumbnails might appear completely black or broken. To force Windows to regenerate these images correctly, you must safely erase the corrupted cache files.
How to Safely Erase the Windows 11 Thumbnail Cache
You must use the built-in Disk Cleanup utility, as manually deleting the database files is blocked by the operating system.
- Click the Start button.
- Type Disk Cleanup and press Enter to launch the utility.
- If you have multiple hard drives, ensure your main
C:drive is selected and click OK. - Windows will spend a few seconds calculating how much space it can free up.
- A new window with a checklist will appear. Scroll through the “Files to delete” list until you find the item labeled Thumbnails.
- Check the box next to Thumbnails. (You can safely uncheck everything else if you only want to fix the image previews).
- Click OK, and then click Delete Files to confirm.
Windows will securely wipe the hidden `.db` files containing the corrupted images. Open your photos folder again. You will notice it takes slightly longer to load this first time, as Windows is busy generating a brand new, perfectly accurate thumbnail for every single image from scratch.
