Windows 11 features a spectacular default desktop wallpaper (the glowing blue “Bloom” graphic). Occasionally, you might want to use this exact image for a video thumbnail, a presentation background, or simply to copy it over to your Mac. However, Microsoft doesn’t just leave a JPG file sitting on your desktop.
The high-resolution, uncompressed wallpaper files are buried deep within a hidden system directory that standard users are not supposed to access. You cannot right-click your desktop background and click “Save Image.” Instead, you must use File Explorer to navigate into the protected Windows folder and safely extract the original 4K image file.
How to Safely Extract Windows 11 High-Res Desktop Wallpapers
You must navigate to the hidden Web/Wallpaper directory inside the core Windows folder.
- Open File Explorer (press Windows Key + E).
- Click inside the main address bar at the very top of the window (where it says “This PC” or “Home”).
- Carefully copy and paste the following exact file path into the address bar:
C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper - Press Enter.
- You are now inside the protected system wallpaper vault. You will see several folders.
- Double-click on the folder named Windows.
- Inside, you will find the original, uncompressed Windows 11 “Bloom” wallpaper, typically named
img0.jpg.
Crucial Step: Because this is a protected system folder, do not attempt to drag the image out or delete it, as you will trigger UAC errors. Instead, right-click the img0.jpg file and select Copy (or press Ctrl + C). Navigate to your own Desktop or Documents folder, right-click in the empty space, and select Paste. You now have a safe, extracted 4K copy of the Windows 11 wallpaper that you can use anywhere.
