When Windows 11 suddenly crashes, throws a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), or abruptly restarts, figuring out exactly what caused the failure can be incredibly difficult. While the standard Windows Event Viewer contains the logs, it is notoriously dense, filled with thousands of cryptic system alerts that can overwhelm even experienced administrators.
Fortunately, Windows 11 contains a deeply hidden, highly visual diagnostic tool called the “Reliability Monitor.” This tool actively parses the chaotic Event Viewer logs and presents them on a clean, easy-to-read timeline, giving your system a daily “Stability Index” score from 1 to 10. It highlights exactly which application, driver update, or hardware failure caused your system to crash on any given day.
How to Access the Reliability Monitor in Windows 11
The Reliability Monitor is not listed in the Start menu or the modern Settings app. You must launch it via a specific command or search term.
- Click the Start button on your taskbar.
- In the search box, type exactly: View reliability history
- Click the control panel result that matches your search.
- Alternatively, you can press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog, type perfmon /rel, and press Enter.
The Reliability Monitor window will appear, displaying a graph of your system’s stability over the past few weeks. You can click on any specific day on the graph (especially days where the blue line drops significantly) to view a detailed list of every critical event, warning, and informational update that occurred on that date.
If you see a red “X” icon representing an “Application failure,” you can double-click it to read the exact error code and file path of the program that crashed, making troubleshooting significantly easier.
