How to Enable the Google Chrome ‘Force Dark Mode’ Flag for All Websites

While most modern operating systems and web browsers support a system-wide “Dark Mode,” the reality is that the vast majority of older or poorly maintained websites still render with glaring, bright white backgrounds. This can be incredibly harsh on your eyes when browsing late at night, completely ruining the aesthetic of your dark-themed desktop.

Instead of relying on third-party extensions that can slow down your browser or inject tracking scripts, Google Chrome actually contains a hidden, experimental engine feature that can automatically invert the colors of any webpage in real-time. By enabling the “Force Dark Mode” flag, Chrome will mathematically calculate and apply a dark theme to every single website you visit, regardless of whether the site natively supports it.

How to Enable Force Dark Mode in Google Chrome

You must dive into Chrome’s hidden developer flags to activate the rendering engine override.

  1. Open the Google Chrome browser.
  2. Click on the address bar at the top of the window, type chrome://flags, and press Enter.
  3. In the “Search flags” search box at the top of the screen, type Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents.
  4. Look for the specific flag with that exact name. The description will state that it automatically renders all web contents using a dark theme.
  5. Click the drop-down menu next to this entry (which is likely set to “Default”).
  6. Select Enabled from the drop-down menu. (Note: You can experiment with the other “Enabled” options like “Selective inversion of non-image elements” if the standard setting makes some websites look strange).
  7. A prompt will appear at the bottom of the screen stating “Your changes will take effect the next time you relaunch Chrome.” Click the blue Relaunch button.

Chrome will restart. Immediately, every webpage you open—including those that have historically only ever had white backgrounds—will be forced into a sleek, dark color palette, saving your eyes during late-night browsing sessions.
