How to Stop Windows 11 from Automatically Reopening Folders at Logon

Windows 11 includes an obscure folder management feature designed to maintain continuity across reboots. If you leave a File Explorer window open when you shut down or restart your computer, Windows will actively remember the exact folder you were looking at. The next time you log in, it will automatically launch File Explorer and reopen that specific directory.

While intended to help you pick up where you left off, this behavior can be incredibly annoying. If you frequently leave your “Downloads” or “Documents” folders open before shutting down for the night, having them pop up in your face the moment you boot your PC the next morning slows down your startup time and clutters your fresh desktop. You can completely disable this automatic restoration feature.

How to Stop Folders from Reopening on Startup in Windows 11

You must dive into File Explorer’s advanced Folder Options to disable the continuity feature.

  1. Open File Explorer (press Windows Key + E).
  2. Click the three horizontal dots (…) on the far right side of the top command bar.
  3. Select Options from the drop-down menu.
  4. The “Folder Options” window will appear. Click the View tab at the top.
  5. In the “Advanced settings” scroll box, scroll down until you find the setting labelled Restore previous folder windows at logon.
  6. Ensure the checkbox next to this setting is completely unchecked.
  7. Click the Apply button at the bottom right, followed by OK.

The continuity feature is now disabled. Moving forward, regardless of how many File Explorer windows you leave open when you shut down your PC, Windows 11 will always greet you with a clean, empty desktop upon your next login.
