The “Run” dialog box in Windows 11 is a powerful power-user tool accessed by pressing Windows Key + R. It allows you to quickly execute programs, open folders, or launch system utilities (like cmd or regedit) by typing their exact system names.
However, on a public kiosk, a child’s computer, or a tightly controlled corporate workstation, the Run dialog is a massive security vulnerability. A malicious user or a curious child can easily press Windows Key + R and launch the Registry Editor, the Command Prompt, or hidden administrative tools to bypass restrictions. To secure the workstation, you can completely disable the Run dialog and its associated keyboard shortcut.
How to Disable the Windows Key + R Shortcut
You must use the Local Group Policy Editor to restrict access to the Run dialog.
- Click the Start button, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter to open the Local Group Policy Editor.
- In the left-hand navigation tree, drill down through the following path: User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar
- Once you click on the Start Menu and Taskbar folder, look at the list of policies in the right-hand pane.
- Scroll down to find the policy named Remove Run menu from Start Menu and double-click it.
- In the window that appears, change the radio button from “Not Configured” to Enabled.
- Click Apply, then click OK.
- Restart your computer (or sign out and sign back in) to apply the policy.
The policy applies globally to the current user. Not only is the Run option removed from the Start menu’s right-click context menu, but the Windows Key + R shortcut is completely disabled. If a user attempts to press it, Windows will simply ignore the input, locking down access to hidden system commands.
