Windows 11 features a powerful Clipboard History tool (accessed by pressing Windows Key + V) that remembers everything you have copied recently. One of its most touted features is “Sync across devices.” If you log into multiple Windows PCs with the same Microsoft account, text copied on your desktop will automatically beam through the cloud and appear on your laptop’s clipboard.
However, this is a massive privacy and security risk. If you copy a password, a sensitive financial document, or a private email on your secure work desktop, that data is instantly uploaded to Microsoft’s servers and pushed to any other PC linked to your account. If you want to use the local Clipboard History tool without your data ever leaving the physical machine, you must disable the cloud sync feature.
How to Stop Windows 11 from Syncing Your Clipboard
You can sever the cloud connection directly from the Clipboard settings menu.
- Click the Start button and select the Settings gear icon (or press Windows Key + I).
- In the left-hand navigation pane, click on System.
- Scroll down the main window on the right and click on Clipboard.
- Look for the section labelled Sync across your devices.
- Click the toggle switch to turn it completely Off.
- (Optional) If you want to purge any data that has already been uploaded to the cloud, click the Clear button under the “Clear clipboard data” section.
Windows 11 will instantly stop uploading your copied text to the internet. You can still press Windows Key + V to view your recent copies, but that history will remain strictly local to the hard drive of the PC you are currently using, guaranteeing your sensitive data stays private.
