How to Disable the Mac ‘App Expose’ Trackpad Gesture (Swipe Down with Four Fingers)

macOS relies heavily on trackpad gestures for navigation. One of the most famous gestures is “App Exposé.” If you place four fingers (or three, depending on your configuration) on the trackpad and swipe downwards, your screen immediately dims and fans out every single open window belonging to your currently active application.

While useful if you have 15 different Word documents open simultaneously, this gesture is remarkably easy to trigger by accident. If you are casually resting your hand on the trackpad or attempting a clumsy two-finger scroll, you might inadvertently send all your windows flying across the screen. You can disable this specific gesture to regain control.

How to Turn Off the App Exposé Trackpad Gesture on Mac

You can isolate and disable this specific swipe from the Trackpad settings menu.

  1. Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of your Mac’s screen.
  2. Select System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS versions).
  3. Scroll down the left-hand navigation sidebar and click on Trackpad.
  4. In the main window on the right, click on the More Gestures tab at the top.
  5. Look through the list of gestures for the one labelled App Exposé.
  6. By default, it is likely set to “Swipe down with four fingers” or “Swipe down with three fingers.”
  7. Click the drop-down menu next to the setting and select Off.

The change applies immediately. You can now aggressively swipe downwards with four fingers all day long, and your Mac will completely ignore the input. This ensures your active application windows stay exactly where you placed them, preventing jarring visual interruptions while you work.
