Windows 11 includes a cloud-powered feature called “Sync across devices.” When you copy text, images, or links on your main desktop PC, Windows encrypts that data and uploads it to your Microsoft account. If you open your Windows laptop a few seconds later and press Ctrl+V, the text you copied on your desktop will magically paste onto your laptop.
While this sounds incredibly convenient, it is a massive privacy risk. If you use a shared family computer or a work laptop tied to your personal Microsoft account, you could easily copy a private password, a sensitive email, or a personal photo on one machine and accidentally paste it onto the other. You should disable clipboard syncing to ensure your copied data stays firmly on the machine where it was copied.
How to Turn Off Clipboard Syncing in Windows 11
You can isolate your clipboard data directly from the System settings menu.
- Click the Start button and select the Settings gear icon (or press Windows Key + I).
- In the left-hand navigation pane, ensure you are on the System tab.
- Scroll down the main window on the right and click on Clipboard.
- Look for the section labelled Sync across your devices.
- Click the toggle switch to turn it Off.
Once disabled, Windows 11 will immediately severe the cloud connection for your clipboard. When you copy data, it will remain strictly in the local RAM of that specific computer, preventing your sensitive snippets from accidentally bleeding over into your other Microsoft-linked devices.
