How to Disable the Windows 11 ‘System Sounds’ (Error Beeps and Notification Chimes)

By default, Windows 11 relies heavily on auditory feedback. If you try to click outside a dialogue box, delete a file, empty the recycle bin, or receive a toast notification in the bottom right corner, Windows will play a distinct chime, beep, or ding. If you are working in a quiet office environment, or if you simply prefer your computer to remain completely silent unless you are explicitly listening to music, these constant system sounds are incredibly disruptive.

While you can simply mute your computer’s master volume, that also silences your web browser and media players. Instead, you can completely disable all Windows 11 system sounds globally, ensuring the OS itself remains quiet while your media apps continue to function.

How to Disable All System Sounds Globally

You can turn off the operating system’s sound effects using the legacy Sound control panel.

  1. Click the Start button, type Change system sounds in the search bar, and press Enter. (This will instantly open the correct Sound control panel window).
  2. Ensure you are looking at the Sounds tab at the top of the small window.
  3. Locate the drop-down menu labelled Sound Scheme.
  4. By default, this is set to “Windows Default.” Click the drop-down menu and select No Sounds.
  5. Optional but recommended: Directly below the main box, you will see a checkbox labelled Play Windows Startup sound. If you want a completely silent boot sequence, Uncheck this box.
  6. Click Apply, then click OK.

Your computer will instantly stop generating warning chimes, error beeps, and notification dings. You can now leave your speakers turned up for Spotify or YouTube without fear of a sudden, loud error beep interrupting your music.
