In recent updates, Google Chrome moved its download manager from a bar at the bottom of the screen to a flyout bubble in the top-right corner, similar to Mozilla Firefox. By default, every single time you download a file—whether it is a large installer or a tiny PDF receipt—this bubble aggressively pops open, partially obscuring your active webpage and forcing you to click away to dismiss it.
If you download dozens of files a day for work, this constant interruption quickly becomes infuriating. You can disable this automatic pop-up behaviour. The file will still download in the background, but the bubble will remain hidden until you explicitly click the download icon to check your progress.
How to Stop the Downloads Bubble from Opening
You can adjust this behaviour directly from the browser’s download icon, without needing to dig deep into the settings menu.
- Open the Google Chrome browser.
- You must have the download icon visible to change this setting. If you do not see the downward-pointing arrow in the top-right corner, download a small file (like saving an image) to make the icon appear.
- Once the download is active or finished, the small Downloads icon (the downward arrow) will be visible next to your extensions.
- Right-click on the Downloads icon.
- A small context menu will appear. Look for the option labelled Show downloads when they’re done.
- By default, there will be a checkmark next to this option. Click it to Uncheck it.
That is all it takes. From now on, whenever you click a download link, Chrome will quietly begin saving the file. The download icon will display a small progress ring to indicate activity, but the massive, screen-blocking bubble will no longer automatically burst open.
