How to Disable the Sticky Keys Shortcut in Windows 11 (Shift Key Pop-up)

If you play PC games or use complex software that requires you to hold down or repeatedly press the Shift key, you have almost certainly been interrupted by the “Sticky Keys” pop-up. This Windows accessibility feature is triggered when you press the Shift key five times in rapid succession, immediately pausing whatever you are doing and displaying a dialogue box accompanied by a loud beep.

While Sticky Keys is a vital accessibility tool for users who have difficulty holding down multiple keys simultaneously, it is incredibly frustrating when triggered accidentally during fast-paced typing or gaming. You can permanently disable this specific keyboard shortcut.

How to Disable the Sticky Keys Shortcut

You can turn off the trigger shortcut directly from the Windows 11 Settings app.

  1. Click the Start button and select the Settings gear icon (or press Windows Key + I on your keyboard).
  2. In the left-hand navigation menu, click on Accessibility.
  3. Scroll down to the “Interaction” section and click on Keyboard.
  4. Look for the Sticky keys section. (Note: Do not simply turn off the main Sticky keys toggle switch here; you need to disable the shortcut itself).
  5. Click anywhere on the “Sticky keys” text to expand its advanced options.
  6. Locate the toggle switch labelled Keyboard shortcut for Sticky keys.
  7. Turn this toggle Off.

You can test the fix immediately. Tap the Shift key on your keyboard five or six times as fast as you can. The screen will no longer freeze, and the annoying pop-up box will never appear again.
