If you have spent time perfectly cropping a bright, vibrant photo to use as your iPhone wallpaper, you may notice that it suddenly looks dull, grey, and washed out depending on the time of day. No matter how much you turn up the brightness on your display, the wallpaper remains permanently darkened.
This is not a display hardware issue. It is a specific iOS software feature called “Dark Appearance Dims Wallpaper.” When your iPhone enters Dark Mode (either manually or automatically at sunset), iOS intentionally places a dark, transparent shadow over your wallpaper to make the bright app icons and white text easier to read in low-light environments.
If you prefer your wallpaper to remain bright and colourful regardless of whether Dark Mode is active, you can easily disable this dimming effect.
How to Stop the Wallpaper from Dimming
This setting is located within the Wallpaper section of the Settings app, not within the main Display settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Wallpaper.
- Look beneath the previews of your Lock Screen and Home Screen.
- You will find a toggle switch labelled Dark Appearance Dims Wallpaper (or “Dim Wallpaper on Dark Appearance” on older iOS versions).
- Turn this toggle Off.
The moment you disable this toggle, the artificial shadow will immediately lift from your Home Screen. Your wallpaper will return to its original, vibrant brightness, even if your phone remains in Dark Mode.
Alternative: Check Your Focus Modes
If your wallpaper is still appearing dark or blurred after changing this setting, the issue is likely tied to a Focus Mode (such as Sleep or Do Not Disturb).
When the “Sleep” Focus is active, iOS aggressively dims the entire Lock Screen to prevent glaring light if you check your phone during the night. To fix this, you must either turn off the Sleep Focus from your Control Centre or go to Settings > Focus > Sleep and disable the “Sleep Screen” customisation option.
