Whenever you use your keyboard’s media keys or scroll your mouse wheel to adjust the system volume in Windows 11, a large rectangular overlay pops up in the bottom centre of your screen. While this visual feedback is useful for some, it can be highly distracting, especially if it pops up and blocks your view while you are playing a fullscreen game or watching a movie.
Surprisingly, Microsoft does not provide a native toggle switch in the Windows 11 Settings app to turn this visual overlay off. To completely hide the volume pop-up, you must use a lightweight, safe third-party utility.
How to Hide the Volume Overlay Using HideVolumeOS
HideVolumeOS is a popular, free, and open-source application specifically designed to solve this exact problem. It runs silently in the background and intercepts the volume pop-up before it can appear on your screen.
- Open your web browser and search for HideVolumeOS. Navigate to the official developer website (usually hosted by Markus V. Strauss) and download the latest version.
- Run the installer. During the installation process, you will be asked how you want the application to run. Select the Tray icon version. This allows you to easily toggle the feature on and off without digging into system services.
- Finish the installation and launch the application.
How to Toggle the Overlay
Once HideVolumeOS is running, the volume pop-up is instantly disabled. You can still adjust your volume using your keyboard keys, and the volume will change perfectly, but nothing will appear on your screen.
If you ever want to temporarily bring the visual overlay back:
- Look at your system tray in the bottom right corner of your Windows 11 taskbar (near the clock). You may need to click the small upward arrow to view hidden icons.
- Look for an icon that resembles a speaker.
- Simply click the icon once. It will change to a speaker with a red ‘X’ next to it, indicating that the pop-up is now visible again.
- Click it again to hide the pop-up.
