A very common frustration for iPhone users is having the screen suddenly become so dim that it is nearly impossible to read, especially when using the phone outdoors on a sunny day. Even if you open the Control Centre and slide the brightness to 100%, the screen remains stubbornly dark.
This is not a bug; it is a built-in hardware protection feature. When an iPhone gets too hot (from direct sunlight, heavy gaming, or GPS navigation), it automatically throttles the display brightness to prevent the internal components and battery from sustaining permanent heat damage.
Can You Disable Thermal Throttling?
Apple does not provide a setting to disable this thermal protection. If the phone determines it is dangerously hot, it will dim the screen regardless of your settings to protect the device.
However, there are several practical steps you can take to prevent the phone from reaching that critical temperature threshold in the first place.
How to Keep Your iPhone Screen Bright
To stop the screen from aggressively dimming, you must help the phone manage its temperature:
- Remove the Case: Thick, insulated phone cases trap heat against the battery. If you are using your phone for navigation in a hot car or playing games outside, take the case off to allow the aluminium or glass back to dissipate heat naturally.
- Turn off Auto-Brightness: Sometimes the ambient light sensor gets confused. You can turn off Auto-Brightness by going to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size, and scrolling to the very bottom to toggle Auto-Brightness off.
- Close Intensive Background Apps: Processing heavy tasks generates internal heat. Swipe up to open your app switcher and close intensive applications like high-end games, video editors, or mapping software if you are not actively using them.
- Keep It Out of Direct Sunlight: The most common cause of thermal dimming is direct UV exposure. Keep the phone in the shade, under an umbrella, or in your pocket when not in use.
Once the internal temperature of the iPhone returns to a safe level, the screen brightness will automatically unlock and return to normal.
