We have all experienced the sudden, jarring shock of opening a webpage only for a hidden video advertisement to start blaring audio at maximum volume. If you have twenty different tabs open in Google Chrome, frantically clicking through each one to find the source of the noise is frustrating and disruptive.
Fortunately, Google Chrome makes it incredibly easy to both identify which tab is making noise and instantly silence it without actually having to close the webpage.
How to Find the Noisy Tab
Chrome has a built-in visual indicator for audio. Look closely at the top of your browser window where all your tabs are lined up.
Any tab that is currently playing audio (whether it is a YouTube video, a Spotify web player, or a rogue advertisement) will display a small Speaker icon on the right side of the tab, next to the small ‘X’ button used to close it.
How to Mute the Tab
Once you have identified the offending tab, you can silence it instantly.
- Hover your mouse cursor over the tab that has the Speaker icon on it.
- Right-click the tab itself (the small rectangular area at the top of the browser, not the webpage below it).
- A drop-down menu will appear. Click on Mute site.
The audio will stop immediately. The small speaker icon on the tab will change to show a slash through it, indicating that the tab is currently muted.
What “Mute Site” Actually Means
It is important to note that the button says “Mute site,” not “Mute tab.”
When you use this feature, Chrome adds that specific website domain to a blacklist. If you mute a loud news website, that specific tab goes silent. However, if you open a completely new tab and visit that exact same news website five minutes later, it will also be muted automatically.
The mute setting persists even if you close the browser and restart your computer.
How to Unmute the Site
If you eventually want to watch a video on a website you previously silenced, you must manually reverse the process.
- Open a tab containing the website you previously muted.
- Right-click the tab at the top of the browser.
- Click on Unmute site.
The audio will instantly resume playing normally.
