How to Set Up a Sleep Timer for Apple Music on iPhone

Many people rely on white noise, podcasts, or soothing playlists to help them fall asleep. However, if you leave Apple Music playing continuously throughout the night, you will drain your iPhone’s battery, consume unnecessary cellular data if you lose Wi-Fi, and potentially wake yourself up during a loud transition in the middle of a playlist.

To solve this, you need a sleep timer. Unlike Spotify or many podcast apps, Apple Music does not actually have a sleep timer built into the app itself. Instead, Apple has integrated this functionality directly into the core iOS Clock app, allowing you to automatically pause any playing media across the entire phone when the timer hits zero.

How to Set the Sleep Timer

Before you begin, open Apple Music (or YouTube, Spotify, or any other audio app) and start playing your chosen sleep playlist or album.

  1. Leave Apple Music running in the background and open the Clock app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the Timers tab in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
  3. Use the scrolling dials to set the duration you want the music to play (for example, 45 minutes).
  4. Below the dials, tap the button labelled When Timer Ends.
  5. This menu usually lists various alarm ringtones (like “Radar” or “Chimes”). Scroll all the way down to the absolute bottom of this list.
  6. Tap Stop Playing. A blue checkmark will appear next to it.
  7. Tap Set in the top-right corner to save this preference.
  8. Finally, tap the green Start button to begin the timer.

What Happens Next?

You can now lock your iPhone screen and go to sleep. The music will continue to play normally.

When the 45-minute timer counts down to exactly 00:00, your iPhone will not play an alarm sound. Instead, it will instantly send a system-wide “Pause” command to Apple Music. The audio will stop, the phone screen will remain dark, and your iPhone will securely lock itself for the rest of the night, preserving your battery life.

(Note: The “When Timer Ends” setting remembers your last choice. If you use the Clock app the next morning to time your cooking, the alarm will not ring—it will just silently trigger “Stop Playing.” You must remember to change the setting back to a normal ringtone for daily use).
