How to Hide the Recycle Bin in Windows 11

The Recycle Bin has been a permanent fixture on the Windows desktop for decades. For most users, having a quick visual indicator of whether they have deleted files waiting to be permanently erased is highly useful. However, if you are a minimalist who wants a perfectly clean, icon-free desktop wallpaper, the Recycle Bin is the one stubborn icon that you cannot simply right-click and select “Delete.”

Because it is a core system feature, Windows 11 protects the Recycle Bin from accidental deletion. To remove it from your desktop, you must dig into the personalization settings and specifically instruct the operating system to hide it.

How to Hide the Recycle Bin

The process only takes a few clicks and requires no advanced technical knowledge.

1. Right-click anywhere on the empty space of your Windows 11 desktop.
2. Select Personalise from the context menu.
3. The Settings app will open. Scroll down the main panel and click on Themes.
4. Scroll down the Themes page until you reach the “Related settings” section at the very bottom.
5. Click on Desktop icon settings.
6. A small, classic Windows dialogue box will pop up. At the top of this box, under the “Desktop Icons” heading, you will see a checkbox next to Recycle Bin.
7. Click the checkbox to remove the tick.
8. Click Apply, and then click OK.

When you close the Settings app and look at your desktop, the Recycle Bin will be completely gone, leaving you with a pristine, uncluttered workspace.

How to Access the Recycle Bin Once Hidden

Hiding the icon does not disable the Recycle Bin functionality. When you delete a file, it will still go to the bin to prevent accidental data loss. If you need to recover a deleted file but the icon is gone, you can still easily access the bin.

1. Open File Explorer (the yellow folder icon on your taskbar).
2. Click inside the long address bar at the very top of the window (where it usually says things like “This PC” or “Documents”).
3. Type Recycle Bin exactly as written.
4. Press Enter.

The File Explorer will immediately jump into the Recycle Bin, allowing you to right-click on any files and select “Restore,” or click “Empty Recycle Bin” to permanently shred the garbage.

If you ever decide you want the icon back on your desktop permanently, simply repeat the steps in the first section and place a tick back in the Recycle Bin checkbox.
