How to Completely Disable the ‘Windows Update Medic Service’ (WaaSMedicSvc) in Windows 11

The Windows Update Medic Service (WaaSMedicSvc) is a background service introduced in Windows to repair Windows Update components so that the device can continue to receive updates. In highly controlled environments where administrators manage updates manually or via WSUS, this self-healing mechanism can interfere with update policies. This guide demonstrates how to completely disable the Windows Update Medic Service in Windows 11 using the Registry Editor.

Prerequisites

Disabling this service requires modifying the Windows Registry. Ensure you have administrative privileges and create a system restore point before making any changes.

Disable WaaSMedicSvc Using Registry Editor

Open the Registry Editor

Press the Windows Key + R, type regedit, and press Enter. Click Yes on the User Account Control (UAC) prompt.

Navigate to the Service Key

In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WaaSMedicSvc

Modify the Start Value

In the right pane, locate the DWORD value named Start. Double-click it.

Set to Disabled

Change the Value data to 4 (which stands for Disabled). Click OK to save the change.

Restart the System

Restart your computer for the changes to take effect. The Windows Update Medic Service will no longer run in the background.

Verify the Configuration

Open the Services console by typing services.msc in the Run dialog. Locate Windows Update Medic Service and confirm that its Startup Type is set to Disabled and its Service Status is Stopped.
