How to Completely Disable the ‘Fitness’ App System-Wide on an iPhone

The Apple Fitness app is deeply integrated into iOS and watchOS, tracking daily movement, exercise minutes, standing hours, and aggregating massive amounts of biometric health data. While highly beneficial for personal wellness, many users prefer third-party applications like Strava, Garmin Connect, or MyFitnessPal and find the native Fitness app redundant. Furthermore, in highly secure corporate or government environments, transmitting continuous biometric telemetry (even if encrypted) to external cloud servers is viewed as an unacceptable security risk. In such deployments, administrators often mandate the complete removal of biometric tracking frameworks.

This guide explains how to completely disable the Fitness app system-wide on an iPhone using Apple’s built-in Screen Time restrictions, preventing the application from running and stopping the OS from aggregating movement data within it.

Disable the Fitness App via Screen Time

While you can “Delete” the Fitness app from the Home Screen, utilizing Content & Privacy Restrictions guarantees the app cannot be executed, re-downloaded, or utilized by background system hooks for silent data collection.

  1. Unlock the iPhone and open the main Settings app.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Screen Time.
  3. If you haven’t already, tap Turn On Screen Time and follow the prompts. (For maximum security, ensure you tap Use Screen Time Passcode to set a PIN that prevents unauthorized changes).
  4. Tap on Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  5. Toggle the main Content & Privacy Restrictions switch at the top to the On (green) position.
  6. Tap on Allowed Apps. You will be prompted to enter your Screen Time passcode.
  7. Locate Fitness in the list of native applications.
  8. Toggle the switch next to Fitness to the Off (grey) position.

Verify the Configuration Lockdown

By restricting the app via Screen Time, iOS immediately unloads the Fitness application from the springboard and blocks its execution privileges entirely.

To verify the lockdown is active, return to the iOS Home Screen. The Fitness app icon (the concentric red, green, and blue rings) will be completely missing. Swipe down to access Spotlight Search and type “Fitness”; the Apple application will not appear. Additionally, navigate to Settings > Privacy & Security > Motion & Fitness and toggle Fitness Tracking to the Off position to ensure the pedometer hardware stops reporting data to any remaining background frameworks. The device is now stripped of its native Apple Fitness tracking capabilities.
