Auto-Capitalization is a core feature of the iOS keyboard designed to automatically capitalize the first letter of a sentence after a period, or when starting a new paragraph. While generally helpful for standard communication, it can be incredibly frustrating for developers writing code snippets on their phones, users entering highly case-sensitive passwords or commands, or individuals who simply prefer the aesthetic of entirely lowercase typing without having to constantly fight the operating system’s automatic corrections.
This guide explains how to completely disable the Auto-Capitalization feature system-wide on an iPhone, forcing the iOS keyboard to strictly obey your manual Shift key presses.
Disable Auto-Capitalization
To stop the operating system from intelligently altering the case of your typed characters, you must disable the feature within the core keyboard settings.
- Unlock your iPhone and open the main Settings app.
- Scroll down and tap on General.
- Scroll down again and tap on Keyboard.
- Look under the section labeled “All Keyboards”.
- Locate the toggle switch for Auto-Capitalization.
- Tap the switch to toggle it to the Off (grey) position.
Verify the Keyboard Behavior
Toggling this switch immediately alters the behavior of the native iOS keyboard across all applications, from Messages and Notes to Safari and third-party apps.
To verify the change is successful, open the Notes app and create a new note. Tap the screen to bring up the keyboard. You will notice that the Shift key (the upward arrow) is no longer automatically engaged (solid black/white). Type a sentence, insert a period, and hit the spacebar. The next letter you type will remain lowercase unless you explicitly tap the Shift key yourself. You now have absolute, manual control over the casing of your text.
