Face ID is Apple’s advanced biometric authentication system, utilizing a TrueDepth camera array to map and recognize the user’s face to unlock the device, authorize Apple Pay, and autofill passwords. While highly secure and incredibly convenient, there are distinct threat models and privacy scenarios where biometric authentication is a liability rather than an asset. Disable Face ID Biometrics
To purge your biometric data and disable the TrueDepth camera’s authentication routines, you must modify the core security settings.
- Unlock your iPhone and open the main Settings app.
- Scroll down and tap on Face ID & Passcode.
- You will be immediately prompted to enter your current device passcode.
- Once inside the menu, look under the “Use Face ID For:” section at the very top. Toggle Off (grey) the switches for “iPhone Unlock”, “iTunes & App Store”, “Wallet & Apple Pay”, and “Password Autofill”. (This disables its active use).
