When you set up a new Android device, Google prompts you to opt into “Usage & Diagnostics.” This system-level telemetry service constantly monitors how you use your phone—recording battery levels, app crash logs, network quality metrics, and system-level interactions—and periodically uploads this data in the background to Google’s servers. While Google asserts this data is anonymized and used strictly to improve the Android ecosystem, many privacy-conscious users prefer to minimize the amount of behavioral telemetry leaving their device, particularly when it consumes background data and battery life to do so.
This guide explains how to completely disable the “Usage & Diagnostics” telemetry reporting system-wide on your Android smartphone.
Disable Usage & Diagnostics Telemetry
To stop the operating system from compiling crash reports and usage statistics, you must explicitly revoke its permission within the core Google privacy settings.
- Open the main Settings app on your Android smartphone.
- Scroll down and tap on Privacy. (On some device interfaces, like Samsung’s One UI, you may need to tap “Security and privacy” and then “Privacy”).
- Scroll to the bottom of the Privacy menu and look for a section named Usage & diagnostics. If you do not see it immediately, tap on Advanced to expand the menu.
- Tap on Usage & diagnostics.
- At the very top of this screen, you will see a master toggle switch.
- Tap the switch to toggle it to the Off (grey) position.
Verify the Telemetry Lockdown
Disabling this switch immediately halts the background telemetry daemon, preventing any further crash logs or usage metrics from being compiled or transmitted to Google.
To verify the restriction is active, back out to the main Settings menu and navigate back into the “Usage & diagnostics” screen. The toggle will remain firmly in the Off position. You have successfully reduced the background data overhead of your device and increased your baseline privacy by ensuring that detailed system diagnostics remain strictly local to the hardware.
