AirDrop is an incredibly seamless Apple technology that uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to rapidly transfer photos, documents, and links between iPhones, iPads, and Macs. While it is undeniably convenient, it can also be a significant nuisance or a security concern. If left on “Everyone,” you may receive unsolicited files from strangers in public places (a practice known as “cyber-flashing”). Even if restricted to “Contacts Only,” AirDrop can be problematic in educational environments or managed corporate fleets where data exfiltration must be strictly prevented. Simply turning AirDrop off in the Control Centre is not enough, as any user can easily toggle it back on.
This guide explains how to use the Screen Time content restrictions to completely disable AirDrop at the system level on an iPhone, removing the feature entirely.
Disable AirDrop via Screen Time Restrictions
Screen Time is not just for monitoring app usage; it serves as iOS’s primary parental control and device restriction hub. By restricting AirDrop here, you can lock the setting behind a PIN code, making it impossible for the user to re-enable it.
- Unlock the iPhone and open the main Settings app.
- Scroll down and tap on Screen Time. (If you have never used Screen Time, you will need to tap “Turn On Screen Time” and follow the brief setup prompts).
- Scroll down the Screen Time menu and tap on Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Toggle the master switch for Content & Privacy Restrictions to the On (green) position at the very top of the screen.
- Tap on the menu labelled Allowed Apps. (You may be prompted to enter your Screen Time Passcode if you have one set).
- Scroll down the list of allowed system applications until you find AirDrop.
- Tap the toggle switch next to AirDrop to turn it to the Off position.
Verify the System-Wide Removal
The restriction takes effect immediately. To verify that AirDrop has been completely eradicated from the system interface, perform the following checks:
First, swipe down from the top-right corner of your screen to open the Control Centre. Long-press on the network connections block (where Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are). The AirDrop icon will be completely missing from the expanded menu.
Next, open the Photos app, select an image, and tap the Share icon. The AirDrop radar icon, which normally sits prominently at the top of the share sheet, will be entirely absent. Your iPhone is now completely incapable of sending or receiving files via AirDrop until the Screen Time restriction is manually lifted.
