Siri, Apple’s ubiquitous virtual assistant, is deeply integrated into the iOS ecosystem. It listens for your voice commands, suggests apps based on your habits, and offers proactive search results. While many users find Siri indispensable for setting quick timers or sending hands-free messages, others view it as an unnecessary battery drain or a persistent privacy concern. Whether you are worried about accidental voice triggers in quiet environments, or you simply prefer navigating your iPhone manually, turning off the “Hey Siri” wake word is often not enough.
This guide explains how to completely disable Siri system-wide on your iPhone, shutting down both its voice activation and physical button triggers.
Completely Disable Siri in iOS Settings
To entirely eradicate Siri’s presence from your daily iPhone usage, you must disable multiple toggles within the main Siri settings menu.
- Unlock your iPhone and open the main Settings app.
- Scroll down and tap on Siri & Search (or “Apple Intelligence & Siri” on iOS 18+).
- At the top of the menu, locate the toggle for Listen for “Hey Siri” (or “Listen for ‘Siri’ or ‘Hey Siri'”). Toggle this switch to the Off position.
- Next, find the toggle for Press Side Button for Siri (or “Press Home Button for Siri” on older iPhones with a physical home button). Toggle this switch to the Off position.
- A warning prompt will immediately slide up from the bottom of the screen, stating that Siri will be disabled and that this action will also remove your dictation data from Apple’s servers.
- Tap the red Turn Off Siri button to confirm your decision.
Verify and Finalise the Deactivation
Once you confirm the deactivation, the “Allow Siri When Locked” option will automatically disappear, confirming that the core assistant service has been shut down.
To verify the changes, long-press the physical Side button (Power button) on your iPhone. Instead of the familiar Siri orb appearing at the bottom of your screen, absolutely nothing will happen. Furthermore, speaking the wake word will yield no response.
Note on Dictation: By completely disabling Siri, you will simultaneously lose the ability to use the microphone icon on the iOS keyboard for voice-to-text dictation. If you rely on dictation but hate Siri, you will have to re-enable “Press Side Button for Siri,” but simply avoid pressing the button.
