By default, every Android device is configured to automatically turn off its display after a brief period of inactivity—usually 30 seconds or 1 minute. This is an aggressive power-saving measure designed to preserve battery life and prevent AMOLED screen burn-in. However, this default behaviour can be incredibly frustrating during specific tasks. If you are using your phone to follow a complex recipe while cooking, reading a long-form article without touching the screen, or monitoring a live data dashboard, having the screen constantly go black forces you to repeatedly unlock the device with wet or dirty hands.
This guide explains how to completely disable the Screen Timeout feature (or extend it to its maximum possible duration) on Android, ensuring your display remains on permanently until you manually press the power button.
Disable Screen Timeout via Settings
Depending on your device manufacturer (Samsung, Google Pixel, Motorola), the absolute maximum time limit varies. Some devices allow you to set it to “Never,” while others max out at 10 or 30 minutes.
- Unlock your Android device and open the main Settings app.
- Scroll down and tap on Display (or “Display & brightness”).
- Look for an option labelled Screen timeout (or “Auto-lock” / “Sleep”). Tap on it.
- A list of time intervals will appear. If your manufacturer allows it, select the option labelled Never.
- If “Never” is not an option (which is common on newer AMOLED devices to prevent burn-in), select the absolute maximum duration available, which is typically 10 minutes or 30 minutes.
Keep Screen On While Charging (Developer Options)
If your device does not have a “Never” option and you need the screen to stay on indefinitely (e.g., for a desk clock or dashboard), you can force it to stay awake permanently, provided the device is plugged into a charger.
- Navigate to Settings > About phone.
- Scroll to the bottom and tap Build number 7 times rapidly to enable Developer Options. Enter your PIN if prompted.
- Go back to the main Settings menu and navigate to System > Developer options.
- Locate the toggle switch labelled Stay awake (or “Screen will never sleep while charging”).
- Toggle this switch to the On position.
As long as your phone is connected to a power source, the display will now remain illuminated indefinitely, completely bypassing the standard screen timeout limits.
