How to Completely Disable ‘Double Tap to Wake’ on Android

The “Double Tap to Wake” feature is a common accessibility shortcut on Android smartphones. It allows users to wake the device screen simply by tapping the display twice, bypassing the need to press the physical power button. While convenient, this highly sensitive feature is a primary culprit for “pocket dials” and accidental battery drain. A screen constantly waking up whilst brushing against your leg in a pocket or bag can inadvertently launch apps, skip music tracks, or trigger emergency calls.

This guide explains how to completely disable the double tap to wake functionality on your Android device to prevent accidental screen activations and preserve battery life.

Disable Double Tap to Wake on Stock Android (Pixel)

For devices running stock or near-stock Android, such as Google Pixel or Motorola smartphones, the setting is located within the display preferences.

  1. Open the Settings app on your smartphone.
  2. Scroll down and select Display.
  3. Tap on Lock screen (on some older Android versions, you may need to select Advanced first).
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of the menu to locate the “When to show” section.
  5. Find the toggle switch labelled Tap to check phone.
  6. Turn the switch to the Off position.

Once disabled, tapping the screen will no longer wake the device. You must rely exclusively on the physical power button or a biometric sensor (such as a fingerprint reader) to illuminate the display.

Disable Double Tap to Wake on Samsung Galaxy Devices

Samsung’s One UI interface categorises screen activation gestures differently from stock Android, placing them under advanced motion controls.

  1. Open the Settings app on your Samsung Galaxy device.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Advanced features.
  3. Select Motions and gestures.
  4. Locate the toggle switch labelled Double tap to turn on screen.
  5. Turn the switch to the Off position.

If you also find that your screen accidentally turns off while you are reading, you may wish to disable the companion feature, Double tap to turn off screen, located in the exact same menu. By disabling these gestures, you ensure that your device only responds to deliberate, physical button presses.
