How to Completely Disable ‘Network Discovery’ (File Sharing) in Windows 11

Network Discovery is a core Windows feature that dictates whether your computer can see (and be seen by) other devices on a local area network (LAN). While this is highly convenient for a trusted home or office network where file and printer sharing is essential, leaving Network Discovery enabled on a public or untrusted Wi-Fi network (such as a café or airport) poses a significant security risk. It exposes your machine to potential snooping or unauthorized access attempts from unknown devices.

This guide explains how to completely disable Network Discovery and File Sharing in Windows 11 to ensure your computer remains stealthy and secure on public networks.

Disable Network Discovery via Windows Settings

The most user-friendly method to turn off this feature is through the modernized Windows 11 Settings app, which allows you to configure your network profile type.

1. Press Windows Key + I to open the Settings app.
2. Select Network & internet from the left-hand sidebar.
3. Click on Wi-Fi (or Ethernet, depending on your current connection type).
4. Click on the name of the network you are currently connected to (its properties page).
5. Under the Network profile type section, switch the setting from Private network to Public network.
